Ape Cave (Mt. St. Helens)

About the Attraction

A visit to Ape Cave at Mt. St. Helens offers a unique underground adventure through one of North America's longest lava tubes. Here’s what to expect:

  • Fascinating Geology: Explore a 2.5-mile-long lava tube formed by a volcanic eruption nearly 2,000 years ago, making it the third longest in North America.
  • Immersive Exploration: Descend a stairwell into the cave and choose between the easier lower cave or the more challenging upper cave, which features rough lava rock piles and requires some scrambling.
  • Chilly, Mysterious Atmosphere: The cave remains a constant 42°F (5.6°C) year-round, so warm clothing and sturdy shoes are essential, even in summer.
  • Essential Preparation: Bring at least two reliable light sources per person, as the cave is pitch-black and cell phone lights are not sufficient.
  • Memorable Experience: Walking through the dark, spacious tunnels is both awe-inspiring and accessible for most visitors, with the lower cave suitable for families and the upper cave offering adventure for the more daring.

Ape Cave is a must-see for those seeking a blend of natural wonder, adventure, and a glimpse into the volcanic history of the Pacific Northwest.
